There will hardly be any of us who do not remember the pictures of lakhs of migrants walking barefoot for thousands of kilometres for their homes. COVID-19 led to many a million losing their daily source of sustenance. During those difficult times, like many other individuals and organizations, Empower Foundation was also actively involved in and exploring interventions that could support and assist people economically. At the same time, GIZ was also exploring interventions to help COVID-affected women. GIZ and Empower Foundation joined hands, and Empower Foundation became the implementing partner for GIZ’s Project Her&Now in Uttar Pradesh. The Project is aimed at providing gender-sensitive entrepreneurial skill training to the idea and early-stage women entrepreneurs who had been affected by COVID from Tier II and III cities for actively building and strengthening the women entrepreneurship ecosystem within the state.

WINCUBATE was born out of the realization that women experience the world differently.  Women create, build and manage businesses differently and it’s crucial that the entrepreneurship ecosystem acknowledges that difference and incorporates it in the way it designs and delivers support programs for women. And that is what we called Women Centric Incubation (WCI).

What was the last movie that has left a lasting impression on you? A movie that has touched you emotionally and made you think about its characters or storyline for days after? A movie that inspired passionate discussions among your friends? I am sure all of us are familiar with the great influence cinema can have on our lives. As a medium, it both reflects and shapes society. A film can mirror your own life, validate your personal experiences, but also present entirely new perspectives, expose issues and question your ingrained beliefs. With our Her&Now campaign, we want to tap that immense potential: Using the entertaining power of short films to change mindsets[1] around women entrepreneurship in India – where only a fraction of all businesses is women-led, where traditional gender roles and expectations often keep women from considering a career as an entrepreneur, and where biases and social structures make it harder for them to succeed as one. Tackling those prevailing attitudes is as essential for the promotion of women entrepreneurship as providing technical support and advancing policy.

Rajasthan is one of the seven lowest per-capita-income states of India, where gender disparity in literacy is 23.2% (World Bank) and women unemployment rate is 65.31% (CMIE). Rajasthan may be a land of businesspeople, ‘the marwaris’, but women ownership in businesses is appalling.

In early 2019, we initiated our search for implementation regions for Her&Now support programmes. We were specifically focusing on geographies that did not have easy access to entrepreneurship development and business support programmes. We also wanted to ensure that the selected regions/states were as diverse as possible. With Telangana being India’s newest state and the state government having very recently established an incubator for women entrepreneurs, it was a natural choice as an implementation region in the southern part of the country. When we approached the Telangana state government and WE Hub, the state-led incubator set up exclusively for women entrepreneurs, we realised that we share a common goal - that of promoting women entrepreneurship in tier-II and tier-III cities.
